Graphic novel goes pop art

Graffiti legend Steve Powers has created a graphic novel with street style, called First & Fifteenth: Pop Art Short Stories. The stories are short, snappy, visual and very urban. Although the frames of traditional comics are disposed of, each page of the book is a panel in itself, with dramatic use of typeface borrowed from signs and other familiar symbols. The art itself is bold and dramatic, reduced to basic lines and a handful of colours. Definitely a book for those who like modern art in their comics.

Big-hitting DC superhero action for the UK

Titan Books has just launched a sweep of superhero titles in the UK, bound to appeal to British fans of DC Comics titles. Identity Crisis by Brad Meltzer is the murder-mystery that kick-started DC's Infinite Crisis storyline of 2004, which changed the DC universe for good. With other Infinite Crisis titles to follow soon, hardcore fans won't want to miss this.

Also, Superman: Birthright has come out in a more affordable paperback edition - click on the title to read our review. If you've read the previous two Batman: War Games titles you'll want Act Three: Endgame; and fans of DC's classic characters should check out JSA: Lost, the ninth volume in the series, which has a chapter drawn by guest artist Dave Gibbons. Lastly, there's a paperback edition of Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross, which showcases the artist's amazing photo-realistic painted work.

All titles are available outside the UK from DC Comics.

V for Vendetta and Moore

If your copy of Alan Moore's V for Vendetta is starting to look a bit dog-eared, or (heaven forbid) you don't actually own a copy yet, there's a new hardback edition that ought to last a lifetime. If you'd prefer something new from Moore, you could always try Smax, which takes two characters from his Top Ten series on a bizarrely humourous fantasy adventure and is just out in paperback; or the second volume of Tom Strange's adventures on Terra Obscura, a parallel world in the Tom Strong universe.
