If you’ve read To Terra, Keiko Takemiya’s manga work will need little introduction, but she’s often considered to have inspired many other sci-fi works, including The Matrix. Andromeda Stories is the second of her titles to be translated into English and was originally published in the early 1980s. It tells the story of a peaceful, almost medieval planet on the verge of invasion from destructive, ruthless machines. Mixing sci-fi alien invasions with fantasy staples like princes, princesses and royalty brought up by paupers to hide their identities, this is a genre bending manga from an artist who’s becoming increasingly appreciated in the West.
