“Because no one book could ever contain them all” enthuses DC Comics’s copywriter on the back of this second greatest collection of Batman stories. To be fair, if you’re starting in 1940 as this volume does, there’s probably a fair few decent Batman tales to pick from, and the writers range from classic Batman creator Bill Finger to modern-day superhero supremo Brian Michael Bendis. If you’re a fan of Batman through the ages, there’s no more convenient way to indulge in a whistle-stop tour of the Dark Knight’s antics over the last seventy years.
