Joann Sfar is probably now best known for his superb Dungeon work, but it was The Professor’s Daughter that brought him to the attention of France’s graphic novel (or bande dessinée) industry. This charming piece of work sees the daughter of a renowned 19th-century Egyptologist falling in love with the reanimated mummy of Imhotep IV, a preserved corpse plundered by her father.
Now available in English, this breakout hit is well worth checking out, whether you’re a fan of Sfar, Emmanuel Guilbert (who did the art), Egyptology, Victoriana or just simply like a well-crafted graphic novel with a little imagination.
