Forget the superheroes, if there’s one series that deserves a place in DC’s Absolute range of definitive editions, it’s Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. This epic rewriting of myth and mythology helped carve a path for DC’s Vertigo imprint and set a high bar for intelligent, crafted comics.
This first volume of four contains the first 20 issues of the monthly series, previously collected in Preludes & Nocturnes, The Doll’s House and Dream Country. The first 18 chapters have been recoloured with Gaiman’s approval, and this volume includes bonus features: Gaiman’s original proposal for the series; character designs from the original artists, the complete script of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and reproductions of Charles Vess’s original penciled artwork.
For Sandman fans or newcomers to comics, this comes very highly recommended to anyone who likes a fantastical but deeply sophisticated and intelligent read.
