Now at volume 9, it’ll be interesting to see when Winsor McCay’s ‘early works’ stop being early and mix into the mainstream. This volume features full colour reprints from Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend, and cells from his famous animation of 1913, Gertie the Dinosaur. There are also illustrations from 1929’s Temperance- Or Prohibition which, since his ultra famous Little Nemo in Slumberland ran from 1905 to 1914, is pushing the boundaries of ‘early work’ a little.
Still, if you’re a McCay fan who just can’t get enough, this and the preceding eight volumes will no doubt be a joy, since much of it has remained out of print for something like a century.
